Bulgaria will probably oppose any action that would ultimately strip Hungary of its European voting rights. The government approved deputy PM Kasimir Karakachanov proposed preparing a statement rejecting any sanctions against Hungary.
The strongest party Citizens for the European Development of Bulgaria (GERB) doesn’t comment on Karakachanov’s proposal yet. But even without support of the GERB party, it would likely be adopted by Parliament.
Many Bulgarian MPs are speaking in favor of the proposal. For example, socialist party BSP leader Korneliya Ninova said it is wrong to punish Hungary – it is just one step closer to tearing apart the EU.
Karakachanov is a leader of the Bulgarian National Movement and also Minister of Defense.
