A Syrian migrant was stabbed in Brussels on Tuesday evening by three other Syrian nationals due to a reported dispute over an arranged marriage that had broken down.
Brussels North police were dispatched to a property on Chaussée de Haecht in the Schaerbeek district of the Belgian capital around 10:30 p.m. following reports of an attempted murder.
They found a 30-year-old Syrian national who had sustained multiple stab wounds.
Three Syrian nationals suspected of the attack fled the scene and remain at large, according to local media.
“It was the result of a non-exchange of girls between two Syrian families within the framework of arranged marriages,” one eyewitness told the Sudinfo news outlet.
An agreement for an arranged marriage was reportedly withdrawn, resulting in a revenge attack on the victim. This account, however, is yet to be confirmed by authorities.
“We can confirm that on Aug. 1 at around 10:30 p.m., police officers from the Brussels North police zone intervened on Chaussée de Haecht following a fight,” said the spokesperson for the Brussels public prosecutor’s office, Stefan Vandevelde.
“They provided assistance to an injured person in their thirties while waiting for the arrival of emergency services. The life of the victim is no longer in danger at present.
“A perimeter has been set up to allow an investigation to be carried out. The exact reasons and circumstances of the facts remain to be determined,” he added.
The investigation into the attack is ongoing.
