In a plenary vote, the European Parliament has decided that Hungarian politician Péter Magyar can keep his immunity, protecting him from prosecution in three cases.
This result was largely expected, as in September, the European Parliament’s Committee on Legal Affairs (JURI) voted to uphold his immunity, and the European Parliament rarely goes against their decision.
Zoltán Kovács, Hungarian Secretary of State for International Communication, posted in reaction:
“That’s how Brussels works, those who serve its interests are protected at all costs. But only as long as they remain useful.”
Taking aim at the Brussels elites hoping to see the Tisza Party head as prime minister in Hungary, Kovács continued: “Péter Magyar is preparing to carry out Brussels’ political orders. Anyone hiding behind parliamentary immunity now will never make free, independent decisions.”
In a final warning to Hungarian voters, he sad, “He is a compromised man—and a politician who is beholden to others will never defend Hungary or the interests of the Hungarian people.”
Magyar was accused of dancing with minors and taking a mobile phone from a nightclub and throwing it into the Danube in one instance, while he also faces criminal and civil charges related to defamation for calling a former Fidesz politician a criminal.
Magyar had posted on Facebook before the vote that he would not take part in the vote and had asked the other Tisza members to either abstain or not press the button.
“I cannot waive my immunity in the face of Fidesz’s lies,” he added.
Yet another case involves politicians filing suits against Magyar for inferring that they were “Russian agents.”
Another Hungarian opposition politician and MEP, DK president Klára Dobrev, will also keep her immunity, shielding her against defamation charges stemming from her claims that the brother of former President János Áder knew about the actions of a pedophile in a case from a few years ago.
Lastly, Italian MEP Ilaria Salis will officially not face trial in Hungary for her involvement in the infamous and brutal Antifa Hammer Gang attacks, which took place in Budapest in 2023.
Hungarian PM Viktor Orbán also took to X to express his disgust: “Brussels protects its own: Péter Magyar keeps his immunity, Ilaria Salis keeps hers. A politician facing criminal charges for insider trading and theft, along with a member of a terrorist group – both protected by Brussels. The Brusselian bureaucrats like to lecture, but the pieces of their rule-of-law puzzle just don’t fit.”
