At the extraordinary EU summit yesterday in Brussels to discuss the war in Ukraine, Ursula von der Leyen, the pro-war president of the European Commission, stated: “Europe must be able to defend itself while putting Ukraine in a strong position.”
President of the European Council António Costa, arriving at the one-day EU summit, stated that “following earlier preparatory talks, member state leaders will gather in Brussels to turn intention into action.” He added that the gathering is extremely important for European defense and security, as well as support for Ukraine, stressing that a comprehensive, just and lasting peace for Ukraine is the goal.
Upon his arrival, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that Ukraine and the Ukrainian people have felt Europe’s support since the beginning of the war on Feb. 24, 2022, and thanked them for not abandoning his country.
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán was also present and posted a video on social media stating, “I can say that the situation on the front lines is unchanged, so the fighting is ongoing. The Americans have made it clear that they are significantly reducing the level of support, and even stopping it in some areas, and now the Europeans are struggling with the question of whether Ukraine should continue the war with exclusive European support. And the majority of European leaders argue in the direction that this war must continue, Ukraine must continue the war, so that Europe not only assumes the burden that has been paid so far, but also takes over the financial and military burden that has been paid by America so far.”
Orbán also previously commented on his meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron, stressing the importance of building up Europe’s defense capabilities.
“While we may disagree on the modalities of peace, we do agree that we must strengthen the defence capabilities of European nations, & these efforts should empower member states rather than Brussels bureaucrats,” he wrote on X.
