Poland’s ports have crushed expectations in transshipments and improved over an already impressive year in 2017. As the growth dynamic increases, investments and infrastructure development in Gdańsk, Gdynia and Świnoujście flourishes.
Gdańsk’s port is the fourth largest amongst all of the Baltic ports, beating Lithuanian Kłajpeda but is still behind Russia’s Primorsk. The number of transshipped goods in Gdańsk has so far been recorded at 25.1 million. This is a 35 percent increase compared to the same period last year. The transshipments also exceeded predictions by a fifth.
It is estimated, that in the near future Gdańsk will exceed transshipments of 100 million tons per annum. If Gdańsk maintains this level of growth, it will take third place and close behind Saint Petersburg.
New deals have been signed in Gdańsk, worth over PLN 105 million (US$28.5 million). They will deepen Gdańsk’s fairways as well as develop the waterfronts. These deals are to be completed by 2020. Currently, the sum of investments in Gdańsk exceeds PLN 1 billion (US$272 million).
In Gdynia, one of the largest investments is the construction of a new ferry terminal as well as the development of fuel transshipment stations. Świnoujście is to see a deepening of its fairways and general port development. These are to be completed by the middle of 2019.
