Police in Bremen are searching for 38-year-old Kayahan Özdemir, who is suspected of killing his ex-girlfriend, Anna R., and seriously injuring her 12-year-old son in a brutal knife attack on Oct. 19.

The assault took place in broad daylight on Agnes-Heineken-Straße in the Kattenturm district of Bremen.

According to investigators, the 30-year-old mother of three bled to death at the scene, while her son survived with serious injuries. Police believe Özdemir, a businessman of Turkish origin, fled Germany shortly after the attack and may now be hiding in Turkey.

“At around 1 p.m., emergency personnel were called to Agnes-Heineken-Straße because an injured woman was believed to be lying there. At the scene, emergency personnel found the 30-year-old woman bleeding heavily. They immediately provided first aid until paramedics arrived. An emergency doctor could only pronounce the Bremen woman dead,” the police report read.

It noted the attacker was wearing a mask and attacked both victims with the knife, leaving the boy with minor injuries. He was transported to the hospital following the attack.

Authorities have issued a European arrest warrant and released photos of the suspect to the public. “Özdemir may be armed and dangerous. Anyone who sees him is asked to notify the police,” Bremen police said in a public statement.

The suspect is the father of Anna R.’s youngest daughter, aged two. Investigators are examining whether the killing was driven by jealousy or a relationship dispute.

Police and prosecutors in Bremen are reviewing eyewitness statements and nearby security camera footage to reconstruct the events leading to the killing.

“The reason the woman was targeted is not yet clear. We are investigating whether it was a random attack or a personal grudge,” a police spokesman said.
