In the wake of the United States’ new security strategy, emphasizing the need for a stronger Europe, one less reliant on the U.S., former Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki (PiS) has posted a slew of meetings he had in the U.S. with like-minded conservative leaders.
The current president of the European Conservative Reformist (ECR) Party had already spoken at CPAC in D.C. this past February 2025, but his visit this time took him to Houston, Texas. There, he engaged with policymakers, academics, and business leaders at events hosted by Texas A&M University, the Polish-American Chamber of Commerce, and Rice University.
“Strengthening transatlantic cooperation in times of change,” the ECR website called the goal of his visit.
Morawiecki’s “fireside chat” with David Satterfield, former U.S. ambassador, special envoy and current director of Rice University’s James A. Baker III Institute for Public Policy, focused on “how Europe and the United States can jointly respond to global security challenges, promote economic resilience, and support a just and lasting peace in Ukraine.”
The former prime minister also touched on the green movement, posting a video of the talk on X, with the caption, “I’d rather be safe and alive than eco. In the USA, I spoke about how we either choose ‘green madness’ or the security of Europe.”
The message of Morawiecki’s visit, according to ECR’s site, was “a strong and confident Europe, anchored in transatlantic cooperation, is vital for global stability and shared prosperity.”
There was also a wrap-up video of his meetings posted by ECR on its Facebook page.
An unofficial version cited in the media of President Trump’s NSS points specifically to Poland, as well as Hungary, Italy, and Austria, as key partners in a new Europe.
“And we should support parties, movements, and intellectual and cultural figures that strive for sovereignty and the preservation/restoration of traditional European ways of life… while remaining pro-American,” the alleged version reads.
Morawiecki also posted on X regarding a new, stronger and sovereign Poland: “The world is changing. How should Poland behave? No one will solve our problems for us. To be a credible and significant partner of the USA and a pillar of the Western world, we need a sovereign economic and defense policy. We need a Europe #PoweredbyPoland! Soon I will present my vision of this highly desirable future.”
Another interesting development, given America’s alleged retreat from Europe, and possibly even its obligations under NATO, as it demands countries step up and cover their own defense, is a report out of the Kyiv Post. The portal says the U.S. has offered to sell Poland “250 battle-tested Stryker armored fighting vehicles from the United States for a symbolic $1.”
The portal also notes that Poland has been ramping up its defenses, with the Polish Army pursuing “its largest expansion in decades.”
Remix News reported back in June 2024 on Poland’s achievement of not only meeting but surpassing the NATO mandate for defense spending, i.e., 2 percent of GDP, reaching 4.12 percent, the highest in the alliance.
At that time, Poland had the third-largest army within NATO, only surpassed by the United States and Turkey.
