Update: This article now reflects an update from the German government, which denied initial reports it was considering joining the war against Iran.
The German government has now denied a report it is reportedly “seriously considering” joining the war against Iran, which was launched by the United States and Israel. Among the military actions Germany was considering was joining the bombing campaign against Iran, according to a report from Times of Israel.
According to various German news media reports, however, this report was not accurate. Germany’s foreign ministry has denied that it will join the war, with the German government citing a lack of resources.
According to the Times of Israel, claims that Germany would join in were obtained from German political and military sources from the foreign ministry and the Bundestag’s Foreign Affairs Committee, who spoke with Israel’s Army Radio.
The German sources indicated that planning was already underway to join the conflict if Iran does not stop bombing targets across the region, which include U.S. military and naval bases in various Middle East countries, but also targets like oil refineries in Saudi Arabia.
The Times of Israel stated that the German embassy did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The involvement of Germany in the war would be a major step for Berlin, with potentially unforeseen consequences. There are already heightened terror alerts due to the war, with fears that Islamist cells could activate in response to the war against Iran.
According to the Times of Israel, “France, Germany, and the United Kingdom issued a joint statement condemning Iran’s strikes in the region, warning that they are ready to defend their interests and those of their allies in the Gulf if necessary by taking ‘defensive action’ against Iran.”
