German police have reportedly shot a student from Kosovo after the migrant stabbed his female teacher in Essen. It is yet another knife attack targeting a teacher by a migrant, which has been an ongoing problem over the last years in Germany.
The 18-year-old student from Kosovo reportedly attacked a teacher at the educational park in the Nordviertel district of Essen, which is located in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia. The vocational school is located between Blücher Straße, Unsuhr Straße, and Altenessener Straße.
The woman suffered a serious stab wound in his stomach. He is being treated at a university hospital and is scheduled to undergo emergency surgery. According to Bild newspaper, it is unclear if the victim’s life is in danger.
Individuals in the nearby area saw a perpetrator matching the description provided by the police. When police cornered the suspect, he reportedly charged them with a knife. The police opened fire on the suspect, hitting him. It is unclear if the suspect is facing life-threatening injuries.
The police arrived at the scene at 9:30 a.m. and have sealed off the entire building.
“We have a large number of officers on site,” said a police spokesperson.
In addition to the teacher, a number of other people on scene are being treated by medical services. Ten students are reportedly suffering from shock after witnessing the stabbing of the teacher or providing aid to the victim.
Dozens of students remain in classrooms, after many of them barricaded their doors, which is standard procedure during a school shooting.
The attack mirrors a wave of physical violence directed against teachers in recent years, often from migrants. Last year, four Syrians stabbed a teacher in Hamburg, nearly killing him.
In 2023, a 17-year-old boy with a migration background murdered his 55-year-old school teacher with a knife just hours after he had been expelled from school for one day for misbehaving.
Another teacher was butchered by a Somali migrant while she protected her 11-year-old daughter in Würzburg in 2021.
