Google has revealed what Czechs are searching for this year, with the singer this year Karel Gott, the popular Czech Television comedy series Most! and the Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris at the top of the list of what most interested Czechs.
Czechs searched for the name of Czech pop legend Karel Gott so often after she died this October that for a while the singer even became one of the most popular Google search personalities in the world.
According to Google’s annual rankings, this year’s most popular event was the anti-government demonstrations organized by Million Moments for Democracy association.
Czechs also demonstrated their interest in series and films, mainly from domestic productions. Most frequently, Czechs searched for the series Most! and the main characters of other popular series.
“Search rankings are sometimes also called the spirit of the time because searching usually illustrates what has happened in the Czech Republic in a given year. The significant increase in searching for movies and series such as Chernobyl, The Painted Bird, Most! or Joker is the most surprising result. It shows that the influence of television and film production is still growing,” said Google Czech and Slovak branch spokesperson, Alžběta Houzarová.
Czechs are also a nation of mushroom pickers. This is evidenced by the fact that mushroom specialties such as scrambled mushrooms and mushroom sauce were among the most popular dishes. Czechs were also interested in how to freeze mushrooms.
As for foreign personalities, 17-year-old American singer Billie Eilish, who sold out a concert in the O2 arena in Prague or the similarly successful singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran, were the most popular in Czechia.
Czechs also frequently searched for information about the 16-year-old Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg.
