The issues surrounding Minister of Health Łukasz Szumowski arose when information surfaced about his brother’s company, OncoArendi Therapeutics.
Minister Szumowski, according to press reports, was a shareholder of the company prior to becoming deputy minister of education between 2016-2018. This was prior to his becoming health minister and his donation of his shares to his wife.
In April 2020, information leaked indicating that OncoArendi Therapeutics had been paid EUR 4.85 million from the National Center for Research and Development (NCBR), a state agency that falls under the authority of the Ministry of Education.
A review of the case by a member of Parliament from the opposition Civic Platform claimed that the total amount of funding has increased to EUR 31 million since 2015.
