Poland is concerned about the European Parliament’s decision that will launch proceedings against Hungary based on Article 7. of the Lisbon Treaty, the Polish Foreign Ministry said in a statement published on its website.

“Every European Union state has the sovereign right to implement any internal reforms it deems appropriate. Proceedings against individual member states only serve to deepen the division between member states and further reduce citizens’ faith in the European institutions”, the statement said.

On Wednesday the European Parliament approved the LIBE Committee report, triggering a procedure against Hungary while on December 20, 2017 the European Commission launched proceedings against Poland. After the vote on Wednesday Hungary accused the European Parliament of fraud as it did not include abstentions in the tally, which would have changed the outcome of the vote and said it was looking into seeking legal remedy.
