Pro-war EU countries funnel billions to Moscow with increased oil purchases

Even as the EU's pro war countries drastically increase purchases of Russian gas, these same countries want to cut off Hungary and Slovakia from Russian energy

A Hungarian official is trumpeting a new report from Reuters detailing the unbelievable hypocrisy coming from the European Union due to soaring purchases of Russian oil and gas, which is funneling billions of euros to Moscow.

Parliamentary State Secretary of the Prime Minister’s Cabinet Office Balázs Hidvéghi drew attention to shocking data on his social media page. According to the Hungarian official, EU countries have significantly increased Russian energy imports.

“Hypocrisy is the rule. The five EU member states that loudly support the Ukrainian war have drastically increased the import of Russian natural gas,” wrote Hidvéghi, pointing to the investigative report from Reuters.

The Reuters report has made a mockery of EU criticisms of Hungary, highlighting that countries like France, the Netherlands, and Romania are all drastically increasing their purchases of Russian energy.

According to the Parliamentary State Secretary of the Prime Minister’s Cabinet Office, France increased its natural gas-based Russian energy imports by forty percent in 2025, the Netherlands by 72 percent, Romania by 57 percent, Croatia by 55 percent, and Portugal by 167 percent.

He notes that the pro-Brussels governments are not criticized in any way for these purchases, but Hungary and Slovakia are consistently attacked for doing the same.

The Reuters article also highlights that, due to energy purchases from Russia, which have been ongoing for years, nearly €31 billion more money has gone from Europe to Moscow than to Kyiv since the beginning of the war.

“This is a textbook example of Brussels’ duplicity! While we are being disciplined and banned from buying Russian gas, they themselves continue to buy it quietly. Principles in words, business in deeds,” added Balázs Hidvéghi.
