In an extraordinary double murder case, a 25-year-old Dutch-Turkish suspect, Efe. Y., is accused of shooting and killing two Syrian victims. Prosecutors allege the suspect believed the two men insulted him during a phone call that turned out to be a prank phone call from a Youtube channel. In fact, the two victims had nothing to do with the prank and had no prior contact with the suspect before they were shot and killed in Piet Wiedijk Park on New Year’s Day.
The Public Prosecution Service revealed during the first day of trial that the “joke” was played on Efe Y. at the request of a relative of Efe Y., who requested the prank from the Youtube channel RouandYT.
According to the prosecutors, RouandYT actually published the prank phone call with Efe Y., in which the pranksters threatened him, resulting in both parties swearing at each other.
At one point, Efe Y. told the pranksters to “come to the Blue Bridge if you have balls, you son of a whore.”
After the call was completed, the suspect walked to the park and opened fire on a group of individuals near the Blue Bridge, according to a report from Dutch news outlet De Telegraaf. Two Syrian victims were shot dead at the bridge after the suspect fired ten shots. A third Syrian individual was narrowly missed as he ran from the scene.
“There was no time for a conversation, argument, or attack from them,” said the prosecutor. “They were shot at without any reason, and it appears that they were really in the wrong place at the wrong time.”
The victims, 16-year-old Mohammad and 18-year-old Mohammed, were residents of a nearby reception center for minor asylum seekers.
Efe Y. was arrested nearly three weeks after the murders but did not attend Wednesday’s court proceedings. He has an extensive history of mental health struggles, including schizophrenia and psychosis, and authorities list him as intellectually disabled.
Until now, the suspect has remained silent regarding the charges of murder and attempted murder. He is scheduled for admission to the Pieter Baan Center for psychiatric observation. The next hearing is set for July 8.
The suspect’s name, Efe, means “brave” or “strong” in Turkish.
