Close to half a century ago, scoring 40 goals in a Bundesliga season seemed unachievable for any football player. Nevertheless, a week ago during the penultimate matchday in the Bundesliga, Lewandowski scored his 40th goal in the season and equalized the decades-long record set by German footballer Gerd Mueller.
Lewandowski, also the captain of the Polish national team, did not stop there, however.
On Saturday’s match against FC Augsburg, Bayern Munich’s striker scored his 41st goal in the season and broke the record which had seemed unbreakable. The Polish player achieved this incredible feat in only 29 matches in the Bundesliga. Lewandowski scored the historic goal in the very last minute of the match.
In an interview from a few days ago, Lewandowski had emphasized that he still had something to achieve in the Bundesliga season which was coming to a close.
“To be on par with someone like that (Mueller) is incredible, but records are there to be broken,” he had said.
