On Saturday, the Hungarian government released a video on its Facebook page illustrating the threat officials have been warning about for months, that the number of illegal attempts to enter Hungary (and hence the European Union) from Serbia is rising continuously.
“This is how migrants are attempting to cross the southern border. Police and the military are doing their jobs,” the government wrote.
According to the latest data from National Police, on this past Sunday alone, Hungarian border police and the military – jointly defending the southern borders – have apprehended 343 illegal border crossings and thwarted a further 187 attempts to enter the country.
Police data also showed that the would-be migrants declared themselves to be of Syrian, Palestinian, Tunisian, Afghani, Pakistani, Turkish, Moroccan, Indian and Egyptian nationals, but the vast majority had no documents or passports to support that claim.
The National Police also said in the statement that in addition to escorting back the migrants across the border, nine persons have been arrested and charged with people smuggling and one with forging documents.
