Two Israeli border police officers were injured in a stabbing attack by a Palestinian teenager in east Jerusalem on Monday, police said.

Israeli authorities confirmed that two officers, a male and female both in their 20s, were hospitalized after a knifeman targeted officers at the Shalem police station near the Herod’s Gate entrance to the Jerusalem Old City.

The female officer is understood to have been seriously wounded in the attack.

In a statement, police confirmed they had shot dead the suspected attacker, who was understood to have been a 16-year-old Palestinian boy.

“A terrorist armed with a knife arrived at Shalem police station and stabbed a female soldier… border police forces neutralized the terrorist by shooting,” it read.

Emergency responders from Magen David Adom (MDA), a national emergency medical service in Israel, were dispatched to the scene and transferred the victims to a hospital in the city.

“When we arrived at the scene, we saw a young woman in her 20s unconscious and a man in his 20s standing. We provided first aid on the spot before evacuating them to the nearby Mount Scopus hospital. The condition of the young woman is critical and that of the young man slight,” MDA rescuer Nadav Taieb told local media.

The attack is the latest escalation of tensions between Israel and Palestine following the Hamas terror attack on Israeli territory on Oct. 7 that left over 1,300 Israeli citizens dead.

The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) vowed to annihilate the terrorist organization following the attack and formidable retaliatory measures in the Hamas-run Gaza Strip have resulted in thousands of Palestinian casualties.
