Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni announced on Sunday at a political meeting of her party, the Brothers of Italy, that she would resign as president of the European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR).

She justified her decision by saying that after the European Parliament elections, she feels her work is complete.

Meloni also claimed that the ECR community “deserves a president who can deal with it full-time, with more energy,” stressing that she intends to focus on her duties as Italian premier.

The Italian conservative announced that she supports the nomination of former Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki as her successor in the pan-European group.

The head of the Italian government gave an interview to Televisión Republika in which she noted that Europe must return to its roots and Italy must play a leading role on the continent.

“Europe has many problems regarding the competitiveness of our role in the world and I think we need brave people now to help Europe face the problems that it faces,” Meloni said per Do Rzeczy. “We have many strategies, but we do not apply the right tools to them and we over-regulate them. And I do not think that is the solution that we need now,” she added.

The politician stressed that the issues related to illegal migration and the decline in the competitiveness of the EU economy urgently need to be addressed. She also took a swipe at the Green Deal, saying that the implementation of postulates concerning ecology cannot take place “in opposition to people.”

Morawiecki spoke at Meloni’s annual party event, Atreju, where he gave the Bothers of Italy leader a copy of “The Lord of the Rings,” with the inscription, “Let’s fight the evil. Together, the light will prevail. We shall defeat Mordor!”
