A Moroccan man has been arrested in northern Italy after allegedly attacking his wife with a metal pipe in front of their two young children, prompting the couple’s 9-year-old son to call the police in distress.

As reported by Il Giornale, the incident took place in Castiglione delle Stiviere, a town in the province of Mantua in the Lombardy region, where Carabinieri officers were dispatched to the family home after receiving an emergency call from the child.

According to investigators, the 37-year-old man is accused of beating his 30-year-old Moroccan wife during an argument. The assault reportedly took place while the couple’s two children, aged four and nine, were in the house.

Witnessing the attack, the older child managed to contact the police and ask for help. Officers said the boy was crying during the call as he described what was happening in the house.

Officers arrested the suspect on suspicion of aggravated assault at the scene, while the victim was taken to the hospital for treatment.

A judge later confirmed the arrest but initially ordered the man’s release with strict restrictions, including a ban on returning to the family home. However, authorities reviewed the suspect’s legal status and found him already to be under the supervision of social services, prompting the magistrate to revoke the probation arrangement and remand the suspect in custody.

He remains in pre-trial detention.
