For the first time since the migration crisis began, Spain has received more than 10,000 immigrants during one month, as reported by the International Organization for Migration. By comparison, only around 1,000 migrants arrived in Italy, which had been the most popular destination for immigrants until now.

A total of 100,000 immigrants have arrived in Europe by the Mediterranean Sea so far this year. Almost half of them ended up in Spain, which is more than in 2015, 2016 and 2017 combined. An overall number of immigrants trying to reach Spain by sea is constantly growing.

However, if compared with the previous years, the total number of arrivals in Europe from Africa in 2018 is significantly lower. For example in 2016 over the same period, nearly 350,000 immigrants arrived.
