An air raid alert was declared in Transcarpathia at 2:49 a.m. due to the threat of a missile attack, reports Karpatalja

Russian missiles ultimately hit Munkács, western Ukraine, a city some 50-60 kilometers from the Hungarian border. Smoke could be seen billowing from Beregszás, just 10 kilometers from the border. Transcarpathia is home to many ethnic Hungarian communities, with close to 10 percent of the population of Munkács being of Hungarian descent.

The Munkács City Council reported on its social media page that a Russian airstrike hit a commercial on Wednesday night, causing a fire in a warehouse.

Mukachevo City Mayor Andriy Baloga also posted that “the target was a civilian enterprise that provided jobs for thousands of residents of our community and district.”

“Fortunately, there were no casualties, but the strike caused a large-scale fire and there are victims who are receiving all the necessary assistance,” the mayor added before thanking all parties “helping the city and its people overcome the consequences of Russian terror.”

Emergency services were immediately called to the scene. Twelve people were injured in the attack, with 10 of them having to be taken to the hospital by ambulance, while two went to the hospital themselves. Five of the injured people are now being treated at St. Martin’s Hospital, and one patient was transferred to the county hospital. According to the statement, all of the injured are in stable condition.

The Munkács authorities are asking the public to close their windows tightly and not go out into the streets unless absolutely necessary due to the fire caused by the missile strike.

Authorities are asking the public to remain calm and not share any footage of the incident.
