Zbigniew Bogucki, head of the Chancellery of the President of Poland, has been placed on the “enemies of Ukraine” list maintained by the Ukrainian organization Myrotvorets. In response, Bogucki rejected the label while reaffirming his opposition to “Banderism,” which

“I am not an enemy of Ukraine, but I am an enemy of Banderism,” Bogucki stated.

Banderism refers to the radical Ukrainian nationalist ideology and movement associated with Stepan Bandera, who is accused of slaughtering tens of thousands of Poles during the Second World War.

The decision to include Bogucki on the notorious list follows his speech last week in the Sejm during debate on the presidential draft amendment to the Act on the Institute of National Remembrance. In that address, Bogucki described the crimes committed in Volhynia and “Eastern Lesser Poland” as genocide. Myrotvorets cited his use of the term “Eastern Lesser Poland” among the reasons for the listing, according to Polish outlet Do Rzeczy.

According to the organization, the grounds for adding Bogucki were: “threat to the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine,” “participation in acts of humanitarian aggression against Ukraine,” and “manipulation of information of social importance in order to incite hatred of Poles towards Ukrainians and to discord between nationalities and religions”.

Bogucki’s statement on X

In a post published on the X platform, Bogucki clarified his position. He pledged continued support for Ukraine in its fight against Russian aggression and assistance to Ukrainian citizens, while declaring that he would keep describing OUN and UPA activists responsible for crimes against civilians as criminals and would oppose their glorification.

“I am not an enemy of Ukraine. I am, however, an enemy of Banderism,” he emphasized. “I am also an enemy of Putin’s Russia. However, to understand this, some in Ukraine would have to stand in the historical truth and in the truth of current events and heal from anti-Polonism.”

Myrotvorets and previous Polish entries

Myrotvorets is a Ukrainian non-governmental organization that has operated since 2014 a publicly accessible database of individuals whom its creators consider threats to Ukraine’s security.

Other Polish politicians previously added to the list include Sławomir Mentzen, Krzysztof Bosak and Grzegorz Braun. The organization’s practice of publishing personal data has been criticized by human rights organizations.

The list has also been criticized as a “kill list,” which means those added to it are considered potentially valuable targets for assassination.
