Two express trains collided in eastern Slovakia on Monday morning, injuring dozens of people and leaving two in critical condition, authorities said.
The crash happened shortly after 10 a.m. near the village of Jablonov nad Turnou, where the railway line transitions from double to single track.
Slovak Interior Minister Matúš Šutaj Eštok told reporters that three people were trapped in the wreckage and confirmed there were no deaths reported so far. “Two people are in critical condition, 100 were slightly injured, and three others were stuck in the trains,” he said, adding that “according to initial information, no one died in the accident.”
Eštok said investigators believe the collision was caused by human error rather than a technical fault. “I don’t want to speculate about the causes at this point, but according to initial information, it is not a system error, but a human factor failure. It turns out that one of the locomotive drivers made a mistake and probably did not give way,” he told reporters, as cited by TASR.
