Hungary will deliver 40 ventilators, 1,650 non-invasive respirator masks and 3,000 boxes of Favipiravir to 20 hospitals in Romania, mainly in Transylvania, to help combat the epidemic there, said Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó. The minister said that the success of epidemic management in neighboring countries also contributes greatly to Hungary being able to successfully manage the epidemic in Hungary.
“Let’s not forget that the epidemic knows no borders,” he said, stressing the importance of intergovernmental cooperation.
The epidemic in Romania is steadily deteriorating, more and more patients are being registered every day, and many hospitals can’t stand the burden: Nearly 15,000 patients were reported by health authorities on Wednesday, and the number of newly registered patients approached 19,000 last week.
The death toll is also rising sharply, with coronavirus claiming 512 casualties on Wednesday. According to data from last Sunday, only 30.7 percent of the population in Romania, which is more than 19.2 million, have received both doses of a vaccine. Peter Szijjártó also pointed out in his statement on Thursday that the fourth wave of the epidemic was raging in Europe, and it is clear that results are worse where vaccination rates are low,
Meanwhile, most countries have ordered that masks be mandatory, but in Latvia, the epidemic is already so severe that the country has been shut down until mid-November and a curfew imposed.
On Thursday, the Hungarian government also ordered mandatory masks on public transportation starting November 1.
