Four separate stabbing incidents in the same day across London on Thursday resulted in one fatality and three hospitalizations, one of which is with life-threatening injuries in a shocking day of violence which rocked the U.K. capital.
Woman stabbed to death in Bethnal Green
Police attending a home in Bethnal Green, east London, confirmed the death of a 40-year-old woman found with stab wounds.
A police spokesperson said: “Police were called at 4.06pm on Thursday, March 24, to concerns for the welfare of a woman at a residential property in Globe Road, E2.
“Officers attended along with London Ambulance Service and found a 40-year-old woman with stab injuries.
“She was pronounced dead at the scene. Her next of kin have been informed and are being supported by officers.
“The death is being treated as suspicious and detectives from the Met’s Specialist Crime Command have been informed. Enquiries are ongoing and a crime scene remains in place. At this early stage of the investigation, no arrests have been made.”
Man stabbed at Wembley Asda with life-threatening injuries
In north London, police were dispatched along with the London Ambulance Service to reports of an incident outside the Asda supermarket in Wembley shortly before 5.30pm, where they found a young man in his 20s suffering from multiple stab wounds.
“He was taken to hospital in a life-threatening condition. His next of kin are aware,” confirmed a police spokesperson.
No update on his condition has yet been released.
Man stabbed in fight near Tooting
Meanwhile in Tooting, south London, a bystander captured footage of an altercation between two males in which one was reportedly stabbed in the chest.
Police attended the incident shortly after 3 p.m. outside the Tooting Broadway Underground Station.
“Officers attended and carried out a thorough search of the area, however, no suspects or victims were identified,” police revealed in a statement.
“A man, aged his 30s, subsequently attended a south London hospital with a stab injury to his chest. His condition was assessed as not life-threatening. Enquiries suggest the injury was as a result of the incident outside Tooting Broadway Underground Station.”
Teen hospitalized after stabbing in Islington
On the same day, a 17-year old boy was hospitalized with a stab injury that was later found not to be life-threatening after an incident in Nortampton Park, Islington.
Police were dispatched shortly after 5.30pm after several reports of a fight breaking out.
A 17-year-old boy was rushed to hospital after suffering from a stab injury. Police were called to Northampton Park, Islington, at 5.33pm on March 24 due to reports of people fighting.
The boy was subsequently arrested later on Thursday on suspicion of being in possession of an offensive weapon.
At the time of writing, Labour’s London Mayor Sadiq Khan had not commented on the multitude of separate stabbing incidents across the U.K. capital, instead using his social media platforms on Friday to promote his messaging urging Londoners to avoid unnecessary car trips which are harmful to the environment.
The number of teens being killed on London streets reached its highest total since 2008 last year, despite a temporary national lockdown. In total, 30 teenager homicides were reported in 2021, of which 27 were stabbed, two were shot and one was killed in an arson attack.
On the same day as the spate of separate stabbing attacks in the city, new figures were published which revealed London’s Air Ambulance service had attended a record number of stabbing and shooting incidents to provide critical care in 2021.
Of the 1,713 emergency incidents it had been dispatched to last year, 595 cases or 35 percent had been for “penetrating trauma” incidents, up from 529 in 2020 and higher than the 2018 record of 560.
