The Witcher has already proven to be a massive hit video game and book series. Now, as it gets set ready to release on Netflix in December, the Polish author of the original novels believes it will be as big as Game of Thrones.

Andrzej Sapkowski’s creation is already sparking excitement from fans as new information is emerging on what the series will be like.

The producers of the series indicated that it will be based on the books of Andrzej Sapkowski to a far greater extent than the video game. The game, produced by Polish video game studio CD Project Red, originally propelled The Witcher series to international fame and made CD Project Red one of the most valuable companies in Poland.

The Polish author of the books, interviewed by Italian magazine La Lettura, said he is convinced that the Netflix series will be a huge success and possibly even bigger than HBO’s Game of Thrones.

The Witcher trailer from Netflix was also released on Oct. 31 and provided fans with a glimpse of what the series will look like. The trailer received praise across social media, with users prasising the visuals and look of lead actor Henry Cavill. Like Game of Thrones, the series will focus heavily on magic, battle and monsters.

Sapkowski praised the author of the Game of Thrones series George R.R. Martin but felt the series had too many characters.

“I value the work of George Martin. I like his series but feel his books have too many characters. I once asked him why he chose to kill off all those characters, and he replied that this is how he likes it. I don’t think his fans share that view.”

The Witcher’s author initially did not think his work could take on the giants of fantasy literature. But he said his series has exceeded all of his expectations.

In the meantime, fans are hoping that the Netflix series is as good as the books and the CD Project Red games. Stakes remain high for Netflix due to The Witcher’s big budget and the company’s clear attempt to create a series that capture’s an audience as big as Game of Thrones.
