A suspect voluntarily surrendered to police on the morning of July 3 in connection with the beating death of an off-duty Swedish police officer. The suspect was subsequently charged and appeared in a preliminary hearing at the Copenhagen District Court in Vestre Fængsel.
The off-duty officer, identified as 32-year-old father of two Christian Zedig, died in a group assault at a public World Cup fan zone in Copenhagen. The victim, from Eksjö, Sweden, was attacked on the evening of June 30 during a large-screen broadcast of the Norway vs. Ivory Coast match on Islands Brygge.
According to eyewitness accounts reported by the Danish outlet Ekstra Bladet, a group of seven to eight young men arrived at the venue and began provoking Norwegian and Swedish supporters. The situation escalated rapidly after Norway scored to take a 2-1 lead.
One of the individuals punched a supporter wearing a Swedish national team jersey in the head, causing him to fall to the ground. Several others then kicked the victim while he was down before fleeing the scene.
A witness described the attack as “very violent,” noting that the group appeared to have come specifically to cause trouble rather than watch the match.
The screening continued briefly before being halted entirely. Emergency services provided first aid at the scene, and Zedig was rushed by ambulance to a hospital with severe, life-threatening injuries. He ultimately succumbed to those injuries on July 3.
Zedig was a devoted football supporter who had traveled to Copenhagen with friends to watch the tournament, including an upcoming Sweden vs. France match.
His wife publicly expressed the profound shock of the loss, stating that their lives were “turned upside down” in a matter of seconds and that he never got to see the Sweden-France match.
The Swedish police union in Region Öst confirmed Zedig’s death on July 3, and a memorial service was held at his local station. Union chair Åsa Bergman stated that colleagues had received the news of a fellow officer’s passing.
Copenhagen Police responded immediately to the incident at the public viewing area. Authorities quickly identified a primary suspect and released his photograph to the public, which was widely shared across social media. It is unclear whether this is the same suspect who turned himself in to the police.
The investigation remains ongoing as police continue to search for the additional individuals involved in the confrontation.
The older sister of Christian has also posted on social media, writing: “My beautiful and thoroughly good-hearted brother. How will we make it without you with us? Who gave them the right to take you away from us? The grief is never-ending.”
Posts from the victim’s social media account were also shared online, where he is seen with his family and friends.
