While shouting “Allahu Akbar”, a man in Hamburg attacked car drivers with a knife in Hamburg on Friday afternoon last week. The police were unable to pacify the man with a taser and pepper spray, and the intervention unit eventually shot the attacker, reports the Bild daily.
The incident took place around 4:00 p.m. near Hamburg’s city park in the Winterhude district. The unknown man threatened drivers and stabbed cars while shouting “Allahu Akbar”. As he approached the police with a knife, one of them fired at him. The attacker died of his injuries.
According to police spokeswoman Sandra Levgrün, a religious motivation behind the attack has to be considered.

It is the second such case to happen in Europe on Friday. In the suburbs of Nantes, France, a man entered a police station that morning and stabbed a policewoman.
The woman in her forties suffered numerous injuries, especially to her legs and arms. The motive for the crime is not yet clear. Police detained the man in the afternoon based on information from witnesses to the attack. The man was shot during a police raid and later succumbed to his injuries. According to the French media, the attacker was a radicalized Muslim as well as a mentally ill individual.
