According to police, the incident began around midnight near Hansastrasse and Kampstrasse when the 29-year-old spat on the hood of the younger man’s Smart vehicle. The act triggered a physical altercation. During the scuffle, the 29-year-old climbed into the Smart and drove off.
The 23-year-old pursued the stolen car to Amiens Square. There, he caught up with the vehicle and tried to force the driver out. In the struggle, he was dragged along the ground and slammed into a traffic bollard. He was seriously injured but his life is not in danger.
The suspect continued driving across Amiens Square toward Freistuhl. On Max-von-Grün-Platz, he repeatedly struck barrier posts, traffic signs, and the chairs and tables of an already closed outdoor restaurant.
Thanks to a rapid search, officers located the abandoned Smart on Hansastrasse. The vehicle had collided with a parked car.
Shortly afterward, the 29-year-old walked into a police station at Dortmund’s main train station and surrendered.
A police doctor took a blood sample from the man at the station. During transport, he attacked officers, though no one was injured.
Although he was arrested, the court ruled that the conditions for pre-trial detention were not met and the man was released.
Police have secured the suspect’s driver’s license and the Smart car. The Dortmund police traffic accident investigation team is handling the case. No details have yet been released about the total extent of the property damage.
