Opel – a subsidiary of the French PSA Group – ran an ad in Hungary promoting its Grandland compact SUV. The ad opens with an aerial shot of downtown Budapest, quickly switching to a young man negotiating the potholes, cobblestones streets and speed bumps, with the ad saying
“Thank you, Budapest, for reminding us how comfortable our ergonomic seats are.”

The ad – originally intended for Germany – made its way to Hungarian social media with comments equally divided between those that acknowledged the state of some Budapest roads and others that feel the ad was disparaging the Hungarian capital.

Opel has an engine factory in Szentgotthárd, western Hungary with a capacity of 500,000 engines per year.
