The Fidesz-KDNP voting base increased by 2-percentage points compared to the week before the flood, while that of Péter Magyar’s Tisza party decreased by the same amount, reports Magyar Nemzet.

Based on the public opinion poll conducted during the flood defense in Hungary, Fidesz-KNDP stood at 47 percent, DK-MSZP-Párbeszéd at 8 percent and Mi Hazánk at 6 percent, all increases over the prior polling, while Péter Magyar’s party weakened a bit to 33 percent.

Those parties that used the first days of flood protection for non-political attacks benefitted, reads the recent analysis of the Nézőpont Institute.

In the week before the disaster, the government parties led (45 percent), followed by the Tisza Party (35 percent), the DK (6 percent), and Mi Hazánk (5 percent).

The latest poll was conducted between Sept. 16 and Sept. 18, 2024, with a telephone interview of 1,000 people. The sample is representative of the population over the age of 18 according to gender, age, region, type of settlement and educational level.

The national response to the disaster and Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s appearances on the frontlines strengthened confidence in the government. Meanwhile, confidence in Péter Magyar’s party appeared to suffer from his opportunism, as he also appeared in towns struck by the disaster in the first days of the defense from where he attacked his political competitors, criticized the prime minister, and even questioned the work being done by the soldiers and the organizers of the defense.

However, given the strengthening of Tisza over the last few months, it is too early to talk about a trend reversal, say analysts at Nézőpont.
