Czech police officers detained five migrants on the D1 motorway, as a passing driver had alerted them to a man peeking out of a semi-trailer truck.
Police stopped the truck with a Serbian license plate on Thursday night. The driver of the vehicle and his co-driver ended up in jail.
“During an inspection of the truck, they found that in addition to tractor tires, it was also transporting migrants,” said Pavel Šváb, a spokesman of the Brno district police.
Šváb explained that the police were alerted to the suspicious truck by a passing driver.
“He noticed a person peeking out of the semi-trailer from time to time,” said Šváb.
A nearby police patrol stopped the truck sometime thereafter.
“We found two adults and three young Afghans in the truck,” the spokesman added.
The truck driver and his co-driver are suspected of organizing and supporting the illegal crossing of the state border.
“Criminal proceedings are underway in the case. We are currently verifying the identity of the migrants, where they got into the truck, and other details,” Šváb concluded.
