During a recent meeting with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, Milos Zeman advocated “Hungarian road” in the completion of nuclear power plant blocks in the Czech Republic. President Zeman is a long-standing supporter of nuclear power, and he also speaks up for Russia’s Rosatom that will build the Paks blocks.
According to Lidove noviny, the visit will be slightly complicated to arrange but Zeman will do everything to look into the power plant to see how the “Hungarian road” works. “We will prepare the program in more detail,” spokesman Jiri Ovaccek said, adding that the visit should take place from May 14th to May 16th, and Zeman could visit the plant on the last day of his trip.
On the other hand, Prime Minister Andrej Babiš said earlier that he would not choose the same way of completing the reactors as chosen by his V4 partner. “We do not consider a similar intergovernmental agreement as Hungary has,” Lidove noviny stated, remembering the prime minister’s words.
Candidates for the completion of nuclear power plants in the Czech Republic include Rosatom as well as American Westinghouse and South Korean KHNP. In this context, the US Energy Minister Rick Perry or South Korean President Moon Jae-in has already arrived in the Czech Republic. The interest in completing the Czech plant is understandable as it is a highly lucrative business. The lower cost limit per block is around €4 billion.
