The driver of an Audi A3 Sportback was driving on the road to the village of Szálka in Southern Hungary on 3 August at 3:19 a.m. when, under curious circumstances, he lost control of his vehicle in a left-turn bend. The vehicle first collided with a fence, then felled a tree and eventually ended up in a four-meter-deep drainage ditch.

There were three people in the car. According to the data available so far, the rear passenger of the car was severely injured and the driver was only slightly injured. The passenger in the right front seat did not require medical attention. The driver was submitted to an alcohol probe on the spot, which showed a high level of intoxication, and the driver was subsequently ordered to have a blood test.

The circumstances of the accident are being investigated at the Szekszárd Police Headquarters within the framework of criminal proceedings.

Although Hungary has a strict, zero-alcohol-level law, with fines running up to HUF 385,000 (€1,000), recent national statistics still show a large number of accidents caused by drunk drivers. In 2019, there were 1,396 such cases, and in 2020 there were 1,361, with some of the drivers being repeat offenders within the same year.
