Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced that work is underway on military training for every adult male in Poland. According to Do Rzeczy, Deputy Minister of National Defense Cezary Tomczyk referred to training for members of parliament, and there is a cross-party consensus on the matter.
At the Sejm on Friday, Tusk spoke extensively about security. “We are talking about the need for a half-million army in Poland. When we look at the numbers on the real battlefront, it seems that if we organize it wisely, we will have to use several methods of action. These are reservists, but it will also be intensive training, which should allow those who do not go to the army to become full-fledged soldiers in a conflict situation,” he said.
“Work is underway to prepare large-scale military training for every adult male in Poland. By the end of the year, we want to have a ready model so that every adult male in Poland is trained in the event of war and that this reserve is adequate to potential threats,” the Polish prime minister said.
“We are not proposing a return to compulsory military service. We have several models, one of the most appreciated is the Swiss model,” he added.
Deputy Minister of National Defense Cezary Tomczyk commented on military training for members of parliament on Monday on Polsat News.
“We are sending MPs in army boots, but of course voluntarily. The MPs themselves asked for it,” he said. “I had such an exchange of views with Marshal Bosak. I promised from the parliamentary rostrum that such training would be prepared and this is indeed happening,” he added.
“They will start in the spring. This means that every MP and every female MP, senator will be able to undergo such a two-day training, similar to the one that will be offered to citizens,” stressed Tomczyk.
Deputy Minister of State Assets Robert Kropiwnicki in an interview with RMF FM declared his willingness to take part in the training.
The Civic Coalition politician admitted that he does not know how to operate a weapon, but if necessary, he will learn.
As the deputy head of MAP noted, the training will be voluntary. He also emphasized that in the case of compulsory military service “there is no such topic on the table today.”
