The heads of the four Visegrad countries of Hungary, Slovakia, Poland, and the Czech Republic issued a joint statement along with Germany during a videoconference about rebuilding the European Union economy after the coronavirus pandemic, according to Polish government spokesman Piotr Mueller
The talks concerned the EU’s response to the effects of the coronavirus pandemic, which includes plans to reactivate the economy, how to distribute financial assistance and other forms of aid, and how this will impact on the EU budget. The leaders also discussed reopening borders and the various challenges that Europe faces even after the pandemic concludes.
The videoconference began with a discussion between Visegrad prime ministers and was later expanded to include German Chancellor Angela Merkel, with the chancellor also discussing the German EU presidency which will begin on July 1, 2020.
The meeting was an opportunity for Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki to present Poland’s position concerning the EU budget in context of the conversation Morawiecki had with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on May 18.
