Following an EU summit on the war in Ukraine, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni called it “anti-Trump,” while being accused of showing up an hour late.
The Italian premier described the meeting devoted to Ukraine as “anti-Trump.” She did not like the fact that most European Union countries were not invited and that the Americans were left out. “The United States is working to achieve peace, and we have a role to play,” she said.
“She arrived last, after everyone had been sitting at the table for almost an hour,” is how the Italian agency Ansa describes Meloni’s visit to the informal summit in Paris.
Meloni was one of the leaders invited to Paris for informal talks on the future of Ukraine and the further fate of the war in Eastern Europe. The Italian prime minister emphasized that it is necessary to provide Ukrainians with appropriate security guarantees and to continue cooperation in the Euro-Atlantic dimension.
In this context, she criticized the organizers of the meeting, who omitted most of the European Union member states and politicians from the United States. In Paris, the EU alliance was represented by the head of the European Commission and the president of the European Council. There was also a place for the head of NATO .
Paris Summit: Meloni Stands Behind Trump. “Working to Achieve Peace”
The Italian prime minister explained that the Republican administration in the United States is “working to achieve peace” and that Europeans “have a role to play.”
The politician did not specify what exactly she meant. U.S. Defense Secretary Peter Hegseth said a few days ago that it is European countries that should -—after concluding an agreement — maintain peace on the Ukrainian-Russian border.
However, Meloni considered the idea of sending European troops to Ukraine to be “the most complicated and the least effective.” Ansa reported that the Italian prime minister called for “considering other options.”
Her participation in the Paris summit came about after “long consideration” in order to “convey all Italy’s concerns,” the press agency reported.
Meloni was one of the few leaders invited to Donald Trump’s inauguration. The Republican had previously spoken highly of her. “I’m here with a fantastic woman, the prime minister of Italy. She’s really taken Europe by storm,” he said during a January meeting in Florida.
