While Toblerone is still being produced exclusively in Bern, Switzerland, the brand is owned by an American company Mondeléz. Already in April, the owner decided to apply for a halal certification to be able to sell its products to Muslim customers. However, the company claims that the original recipe remains unchanged.
Afraid of the reaction of Swiss consumers, the company has not been promoting the news and decided not to put a “halal” designation on the chocolate wrappers.
This topic is politically explosive. According to the Swiss newspaper Blick, companies promoting halal products are facing frequent challenges to boycott, especially on social media. However, the halal grocery business is growing very fast. According to the Swiss daily, in France, home to about six million Muslims, “halal” food has overtaken the organic food segment already.
