The Confederation party has reacted with outrage over MEP Grzegorz Braun’s bid for president of Poland, and will now remove him from the party.
Braun, who is the leader of the Confederation of the Polish Crown party, which is part of the right-wing alliance with Confederation, made his decision to run for president despite the fact that the Council of Confederation Leaders chose Sławomir Mentzen as the candidate of the group.
A motion to exclude Braun from the Confederation has already been filed with the party court. Braun is a staunch nationalist and Catholic, a member of The Crown, and known for controversial views in the past, including against Jews.
“Yesterday, I received assurances from Grzegorz Braun that he does not intend to run in the presidential elections. I regret that I was misled… This is a political mistake, and there are consequences for it, said Krzysztof Bosak, who is the deputy marshal in the Polish parliament and a leading figure in Confederation.
The party is looking to focus on the campaign of Mentzen.
Last January, Remix News reported that the Polish parliament had removed Braun’s immunity, with the Warsaw District Prosecutor’s Office intending to press several charges against him, related to incidents spanning 2022-2023, including one incident in which he put out Hanukkah candles in the Sejm with a fire extinguisher.
