With cheap designer drugs flowing into Hungary, the government is reacting with a “zero tolerance” policy and conducting large-scale police raids that have resulted in 500 arrests in just two weeks.

Government Commissioner László Horváth stated that Hungary is unique in Europe in that it is declaring that it is an anti-drug country and has zero tolerance towards drug traffickers

“Recently, cheap designer drug dealers have crossed a line and flooded Hungary with their poisons in such large numbers that the government now needs not a long-term drug strategy, but action,” László Horváth told Magyar Nemzet.

Labeled “Operation Delta,” the Hungarian police have published videos of the raids across the country, showing off drugs seized.

“Everyone has a legitimate expectation that the government will provide a high level of guarantee that it will protect them from drugs,” Horváth said.

The government commissioner recalled that he had recently traveled with Balázs Hankó, the Minister responsible for Culture and Innovation, on the Gödöllő HÉV train, from the Ilonatelep stop to Kerepes. The minister – who is the constituency president of the region – stated during the trip: “this is one of the most infected settlements in terms of drug dealing.”

In his interview with the Hungarian newspaper, Horváth also pointed out that the first step of the highest level of defense against drug distribution is the constitutional amendment, which, according to him, must be taken into account by all lower-level legislation and cannot contradict it in any way.

The Delta program is in full swing

The government commissioner responsible for the eradication of drug trafficking reminded that the actions launched on March 1 are also unprecedented, as the police significantly increased their activity against drug dealers last year.

“Since March this year, more than 3,500 police officers have participated in the operation at more than 200 locations, and more than 180 entertainment venues have been inspected,” he said, also drawing attention to the fact that around 500 people were arrested and proceedings were initiated in nearly 300 cases. Most of them in Heves County.

However, the interview also revealed that in just two weeks, more than a ton of drugs, as well as cars and weapons, were seized.

Horváth also pointed out that the actions are concentrated in the most infected areas: Nógrád, Heves, Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén, Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg, Szabolcs-Szatmár, Hajdú-Bihar, Jász-Nagykun-Szolnok and Pest counties. According to him, he will soon touch on these areas during his country tour. Finally, when asked by Magyar Nemzet whether the capacity of prisons will be able to handle the measures, the politician replied, “we will solve it, it will not be an obstacle.
