A Ukrainian suspected by Germany of involvement in the Nord Stream gas pipeline bombing has been arrested in a town near Warsaw.

Mariusz Kamiński, MEP and former minister of the interior under PiS, was quick to slam the move.

“The detention on behalf of Germany of a Ukrainian citizen suspected of the attack on Nord Stream is a scandal and should never have taken place. This is a manifestation of Tusk’s subservience to Berlin. This man should be released immediately,” he posted on X.

Kamiński also wrote that Europe is better off without Nord Stream, as it serves only to fund Putin’s war chest.

“Russian Gazprom is a tool for conducting Russia’s imperial policy, and Nord Stream served to finance Russian wars, including the barbaric war against Ukraine. The blowing up of NS was in Europe’s interest,” he wrote.

According to wPolityce, the lawyer for the accused, Tymoteusz Paprocki, told PAP that his client, Volodymyr Z., was detained on the basis of a European Arrest Warrant issued by Germany.

“At 1 p.m., the proceedings at the District Prosecutor’s Office in Warsaw will begin, after which I will be able to comment more, because then I will know what charges are being brought against my client and what the next steps will be in this case,” Paprocki told press.

“Whatever Ukrainian citizen participated in these activities, taking into account the war in Ukraine and the fact that the owner of this infrastructure is a Russian company that directly finances the war in Ukraine, it is difficult to believe that these actions could be considered a crime,” he added.

According to German intelligence, Volodymyr Z., allegedly a diving instructor, participated in blowing up three of the four lines of the two Nord Stream 1 and 2 gas pipelines in September 2022.

The spokesman for the District Prosecutor’s Office in Warsaw, Prosecutor Piotr Antoni Skiba, confirmed that the suspect is being investigated in connection with the execution of a European Arrest Warrant (EAW).

He added that a briefing will be held at the Warsaw District Prosecutor’s Office between 3 and 4 p.m.
