A 14-year-old Austrian girl, described as goth and “emo-like” by witnesses, is accused of murdering a 64-year-old woman in a Vienna cemetery. The girl, who was described as wearing all black, having “black dyed “jet-black hair,” piercings, and looking “emo,” was reportedly covered in blood after the stabbing attack.
Arthur Altbart, a junior undertaker at the Altbart family funeral home, who witnessed the aftermath, provided a more detailed description of the suspect. He noted that her appearance did not initially suggest someone capable of such a deed:
“I went over immediately after hearing that something had happened,” says Altbart. “She was extremely unremarkable, emo-like, jet-black hair, piercings on her face, all in black. An absolutely unassuming girl. That anyone could think she could do something like that? Never.”
Altbart said, “The young woman had an extreme amount of blood on her hands.”
The murder allegedly took place on a Monday at 4:00 p.m. in Vienna-Penzing. A bystander stumbled upon the body of a 64-year-old woman lying motionless between graves at the Baumgarten cemetery.
The witness immediately ran to the Altbart family funeral home, with the operators of the funeral home immediately calling police.
Despite the rapid arrival of emergency services and immediate attempts at resuscitation, the woman could not be saved.
“It’s really terrible. The woman was apparently in the wrong place at the wrong time,” said Heini Altbart, an owner of the funeral home.
Officers began searching for a suspect at the supervised living facility located near the cemetery. There, they took a 14-year-old girl into custody based on her behavior, her description, and the fact that she was covered in blood.
Witnesses described the young girl as being “completely emotionless” throughout the ordeal.
“She was completely emotionless; she apparently didn’t care,” said Albert Altbart.
While in handcuffs, the girl reportedly made a casual request to the officers: “Can I have a cigarette?”
When the 14-year-old girl was interrogated, she confessed to the killing.
Preliminary investigations suggest that there was no prior relationship with the elderly victim, meaning there is currently no motive for the crime.
The Vienna State Criminal Police Office is continuing its investigation in cooperation with the public prosecutor’s office. An autopsy of the victim is scheduled for Tuesday.
