A 25-year-old Sudanese national has been arrested, accused of launching a sudden and violent attack on a couple relaxing on a park bench in Vienna’s Märzpark on Wednesday evening.

According to police, cited by Kronen Zeitung, the incident occurred at around 6 p.m. in the Rudolfsheim-Fünfhaus district. A 35-year-old man and his girlfriend were sitting on a bench when the suspect approached and stood in front of them.

The couple reportedly asked him several times what he wanted, but received no response.

Instead, the man allegedly struck the 35-year-old without warning, triggering a physical altercation. During the struggle, the suspect is said to have pulled a pair of scissors from his waistband and used them to stab the victim multiple times.

Emergency responders treated the victim at the scene. “The injured person was treated by Vienna’s professional rescue service and taken to a hospital. His injuries are not life-threatening,” read the police report.

The suspect then reportedly removed his clothing shortly before officers arrived and attempted to flee the area completely naked. He was apprehended by responding officers, who also seized the scissors believed to have been used in the assault.

The suspect remains in custody, and the investigation into the incident is ongoing.

Also from Vienna this week, a 14-year-old Austrian girl, described as goth and “emo-like” by witnesses, was accused of murdering a 64-year-old woman in a Vienna cemetery. She later confessed to the killing at a police interview.

Meanwhile, a 22-year-old Pakistani national was sentenced to life imprisonment for targeting a random victim, beating him to death, and filming the fatal blows.

The case dates back to May 2024, when the defendant encountered a 27-year-old man from Bangladesh who, according to the prosecutor, “suffered from schizophrenia and was often outside at night to take walks” in the Vienna-Favoriten district. Without provocation, the defendant pushed the mentally ill victim against a fence and beat him until he lay motionless on the asphalt.
