Three dead bodies on the Polish-Belarusian border on Sunday, according to Lieutenant Anna Michalska, the spokeswoman of the Polish Border Guard. She told the Polish Press Agency that the deceased were most likely illegal migrants, but until the prosecutor’s office carries out its investigation, the Border Guard will not reveal further information.
Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki announced an investigation into the three bodies found on the border.
“Services and the prosecutor’s office are working on site to explain the circumstances of this tragic event. The possible connection between these dramatic events and the hitherto Belarusian provocations on our Eastern border must be investigated,” he commented on social media.
Another incident involved eight illegal migrants becoming trapped in a swamp near the Polish-Belarusian border. The five men and three women had to be rescued by a joint effort carried out by the Polish Border Guard, police, military and fire brigade. Seven of the migrants were taken to hospitals and one woman was taken to a guarded center for foreigners as she did not require medical assistance.
The migrants’ identity is being established, but they were most likely Syrian citizens with one Congolese citizen.
Michalska stated that Saturday saw a record number of 324 attempts to illegally cross the Polish border and 276 on Sunday. She added that officers had detained two persons for organizing illegal transfers of people across the border — one Uzbekistan and one Georgian citizen.
Since the start of September 2021, the Polish Border Guard has recorded more than 4,000 attempts to illegally cross Poland’s border with Belarus.
On Sept. 2, the government introduced a state of emergency on the border strip in parts of the Lubelskie and Podlaskie regions. The state of emergency concerns 183 towns and will be in effect for 30 days.
