Angela Merkel’s policy on Russia during her tenure as chancellor was based around pursuing “Bismarck’s imperial dream,” said Polish MEP Jacek Saryusz-Wolski, who is a member of the government’s ruling Law and Justice (PiS) party.
During an interview with German news outlet RND, Merkel said that she did not believe in changing Russia through trade but in creating a partnership through trade, which is how Merkel explained how Germany became dependent on Russian energy while also pursuing the construction of both the Nord Stream pipelines.
Saryusz-Wolski dissected Merkel’s thinking, writing, “So it was not a question of trying to democratize Russia but the pursuit of a geopolitical objective. A partnership with whom against whom? The USA? Central and Eastern Europe?”
Jacek Saryusz-Wolski went on to say that Merkel’s interview shows evidence of her efforts to realize Bismarck’s imperial dream.
