Hungary and Ukraine will establish a presidential hotline, Hungarian President Katalin Novák announced on Wednesday after meeting with her Ukrainian counterpart, Volodymyr Zelensky.
Novák was in Kyiv attending the third Crimea Platform Summit, a diplomatic summit established by Zelensky in August 2021.
In a Facebook post, Novák summarized in five points the main achievements of her visit:
Here’s what we agreed on:
- We will establish a direct presidential communication channel, in line with our neighbors.
- We will prepare a new document on relations between the two countries.
- We will participate in the discussions on the peace formula initiated by the Ukrainian President.
- We will work together on children affected by war as a priority.
- We will make progress as soon as possible on the issue of minority rights for the Hungarian community in Transcarpathia.
In his turn, the Ukrainian President welcomed Novák’s attending the summit:
Novák also posted an image of herself in a bomb shelter in Kyiv, where she had to spend an hour during an air raid warning.
Ukraine and Hungary have been at extreme odds over a variety of issues, with tension rising significantly since the war broke out between Ukraine and Russia. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has called for an immediate ceasefire and an end to sanctions on Russia to restore peace and save Europe’s economy.
