German police are investigating a case of brutal rape of an 11-year-old girl. The case took place in January in the palace garden in the town of Neustrelitz in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.

According to Andreas Lins, spokesman for the public prosecutor’s office, the alleged perpetrator is already in custody.

The victim received medical treatment after the incident but is no longer in the hospital, stated Lins.

The perpetrator is allegedly a young man from Afghanistan who came to Germany as an unaccompanied minor refugee and last lived in accommodation in Neustrelitz.

The attacker is said to be 16 years old, but police officers will his age again, as he is suspected of being older, according to German newspaper Bild.

The alleged perpetrator and the victim were probably loosely acquainted and probably were on a date. It is still unclear whether they knew each other through a circle of acquaintances or had met before the incident.
