A 20-year-old Afghan national has been remanded in custody in Germany after an 11-year-old girl was allegedly sexually assaulted inside a school restroom in Koblenz.

According to prosecutors, the man is suspected of committing sexual acts against the child on school grounds on April 28. A second young man, aged 19, is also under investigation as a suspected accomplice.

Authorities have not yet clarified how the two men allegedly gained access to the school.

According to Focus Online, the 19-year-old suspect is accused of holding the child down while the 20-year-old allegedly carried out the assault.

The child victim told her older sister about the attack two days later, which led to her parents contacting the police. The family reportedly tracked the Afghan suspect to a house and alerted the authorities.

The 20-year-old was arrested on May 4 and has been held in pre-trial detention.

The Koblenz public prosecutor’s office confirmed to SWR that the detained suspect is an Afghan national. Prosecutors also said he is being investigated over another alleged sexual offense and had previously been fined for possessing a blank-firing pistol without the required firearms license.

Koblenz police said they made the case public after false photos and rumors about an alleged perpetrator began spreading on social media.

The school involved is in contact with police and has established a crisis team to communicate with students and parents.
