Language experts in Poland have advised that although the term “Murzyn”, which means negro, functioned in a neutral context in the 1970s and 1980s, times have changed, and the connotations are no longer the same.

Some have complained of being attacked on the internet for using the word “Murzyn,” even though they were not doing so in a pejorative fashion.

A hashtag action — #DontCallMeMurzyn — was initiated in response, mainly by expats living in Poland.
