The residents of a peaceful neighborhood in Cologne are currently reeling from a horrific discovery made over the weekend. A 93-year-old man was found beaten to death in his bungalow in Neubrück on Sunday by his adult children, an event that authorities later characterized as a fatal robbery.

According to a joint statement released by the police and public prosecutor on Tuesday, investigators believe that unidentified attackers entered the home on Böhmweg sometime between Friday and Sunday, according to the police report.

The crime apparently went unnoticed by neighbors until the discovery of the body, which showed serious injuries that indicated “massive violence.”

Following the assault, the perpetrators are believed to have fled the scene with stolen goods. An autopsy has since confirmed that the victim succumbed to these specific injuries.

A homicide squad is now searching for suspects in the case.

So far, no potential information has been released about the background of the suspects.

Home burglaries increased by 5.7 percent in 2025, but cases involving a burglary that turns into a murder are very rare. In 2025, there were 2,453 recorded cases of murder and manslaughter across Germany. This represents a 6.5 percent increase compared to 2024.

When it comes to homicides, nearly all cases are solved, reaching 94 percent in 2026. This compares extremely favorably to the United States, which is only at 61 percent.
